Digitization of Ford GT40 using FreeScan UE 11 and Verisurf

The SHINING 3D equipment and Verisurf software allow for digitizing original automobiles, and the data obtained is used to create precise replicas using modern manufacturing processes. In the case of the Ford GT40, CP Tech took on the task of digitization, using the latest handheld 3D scanner FreeScan UE 11 from SHINING 3D. This system is ideal for 3D scanning of shiny and reflective surfaces.

CP Tech: Reliable Manufacturer

CP Tech is a reliable manufacturer of automotive components with twenty years of experience and an established client base in motorsport and automotive engineering. One of their clients, Sautter Historic Racing company, specializes in creating replicas and restoring famous vintage cars, such as Bizzarrini, Ford GT40, and Austin Healey. This company has its own racing team called Gotcha Historic Racing Team. For decades, CP Tech and Sautter Historic Racing have been cooperating to help historically significant cars return to the racetracks.

Ford GT40: Motorsport Legend

The Ford GT40 is a legend and a symbol of prestige in the world of motorsport. From 1966 to 1969, the Ford GT40 dominated in racing, and the famous battle between Ferrari and Ford in the "24 Hours of Le Mans" remains a favorite topic for documentaries and feature films. The name of the car comes from its forty-eight-inch height, which is a requirement of the Gran Turismo class. Despite being half a century old, thanks to the efforts of CP Tech and Sautter Historic Racing, its replicas continue to hit the racetracks in the 21st century.

Digitization Process

Before digitization, markers are applied to the object, necessary for the 3D scanner to accurately determine its position relative to the scanned object. Then the object is measured using built-in laser emitters with an accuracy of up to 0.8 mm. The smallest details are fixed - drilled holes, joints, surface relief. The obtained data is exported to Verisurf software, where it is checked for compliance with the specified values and prepared for reverse engineering.

The unique feature of this scheme is that data from FreeScan UE can be transferred to Verisurf directly, without using an intermediate interface. In this case, the Offline Scan Data Suite 2021 Edition was used, specifically designed for the 3D scanning market and providing full functionality for reverse engineering and quality control.
